Jan. 2010, Coming though the Tamarack Resort situation, the team stands on fairly solid ground. We picked up a few new sponsors with Disaster Kleen-up of Idaho and Therapeutic Associates. We are now talking with Athletes Honey Milk, and hope to have that wonderful product sponsor on board. We have not picked up any new Professional level riders, but have retained most of the Team Tamarack racers. Looking forward to having some fresh amateur blood injected into the program. Thanks for reading…D

BOISE, ID, September 20 — The Wild Rockies Series wrapped up the 2007 season with fun, fun, fun...

The Wild Rockies Series wrapped up the 2007 season with fun events for everyone held at Bogus Basin Resort. Over 230 racers participated in events during the weekend in Boise, Idaho on Sept 14, 15, and 16. Our Twilight Run, Singlespeed Championship, Kamikaze Downhill and Bogus to Boise Banzai represented round 7 of the 2007 Wild Rockies Regional Championship Series and attracted participants from Idaho, Utah, Montana and California. The first race of the weekend was the cross-country twilight run held Friday evening on a wild, 5.5-mile course with 1100 vertical feet of elevation, rock gardens and numerous sections of new trail. Saturday began with the Idaho State and Northwestern Regional Single Speed Championships, sanctioned by USA Cycling. Racers competed over a special, very tough, 6-mile leg that included new sections of single-track. Following the Single Speed race was the downhill race, on a brand new course; dubbed the Kamikaze because the pro/expert course was littered by big rocks and gaps, intimidating most riders to the point of a walking inspection prior to race time. This race was a technical course built especially for the Wild Rockies Bogus weekend by a group of Reed Cycle volunteers. This course is extremely technical and safety was overseen by Darren Lightfield. Mandatory walking inspections were required and its recommended during a race or not. Lorien Lightfield took extra care to set up a fun and safe course for the beginner racers, ensuring they had their own Kamikaze experience. And to top off the weekend, on Sunday at high noon, more than 120 individuals ascended Deer Point chairlift and toed the line for the dramatic uphill run-to-your-bike LeMans style start of the Bogus to Boise Banzai. Then they bombed down to the finish line on N. 8th Street.

The weekend races were the final round of the 2007 Wild Rockies Regional Championship Series with over $1,500.00 cash and over $3,000 in prizes awarded courtesy of the Duke Foundation, Wild Rockies Racing, Reed Cycle and Idaho Mountain Touring. Eco-Lounge donated a $400 snowboard for the Banzai raffle. 2007 Wild Rockies Series awards go to riders who competed in at least three races. Top racers in each category will be recognized by Wild Rockies and the series sponsors at a season ending party October 5, 2007.
Twilight Run Summary
Bogus Twilight runners chose between 10k and 20k courses. The 20K run was topped by overall winner and adventure racer Joelle Vaught who threw down 45 min lap times. The Team Montrail racer took the lead when the only two runners in front of her ran off course, following trail construction course markers instead of the race course markers. Joelle’s husband, Steve finished first in the mens 20k with a time of 1:32:48. Ester Ceja was fastest 10k woman with a time of 55:44 and Jay Merritt of Team Tamarack Adventure Program was the fastest 10k man with a time of 49:54. Snacks and prizes from Shus Idaho Running Company were had by all as the sun set and the night chill set in.

Single Speed Race Summary
21 men and women lined up for the Idaho State Single Speed Championships. Pro rider Cody Peterson from Team Scott Bicycles threw the hammer down and blazed the 12-mile course in under one hour, winning the mens division by 30 seconds over Cary Smith, athlete extraordinaire from Jackson Hole. Bode Development rider Engin Yesimeris made his Semi-Pro debut with a solid third place. The womens singlespeed event was handily won by Joanna Peters from Team Tamarack Resort with a 1:09:06 finish. A close second was Lynn Stott of Team Tamarack Resort, the former Olympic athlete is finding her bike legs and seems to be getting faster and faster in every race she contests. Following Lynn was Jocelyn Johns, sponsored by Bikes to Boards, finding out what it is like to go head to head with national caliber professionals. Dont be misunderstood¦ she was not intimidated.

Kamikaze Downhill Summary
Speaking of national caliber, the new Kamikaze downhill course at Bogus had riders making comparisons to the national course at Park City, Utah. The quickest rider down was Team Tamarack Resort Pro rider Carl Marcum, who clocked a scary, quick 2:05.499 over the nasty, gapped out 1-mile course. We look forward to the Downhill event drawing more people in the future. This course is developing nicely and we have some enthusiastic trail building going on at Bogus Basin. If you like to go big, this is the course for you, says Darren Lightfield, owner of Wild Rockies Racing. As the downhill event finished up, racers and families were treated to a sweet BBQ sponsored by REED Cycles of Eagle with proceeds going towards development of new intermediate trail options on Bogus property.

Bogus to Boise Banzai Race Summary
Sunday started off with more than half of these riders treated to high class shuttle from Boise to Bogus on a Valley Express Bus. IMT volunteers, mostly members of Lactic Acid Cycling Club, made sure the riders and their bikes were loaded with style and comfort, providing first class service and breakfast to boot. The riders benefited most by not having to shuttle back up to Bogus to get their cars after the race. Starting as soon as everyone was at the top of the Deer Point lift everyone raced to their bikes in a LeManns style start. Greedy Darren Lightfield quickly grabbed the hole shot, only to suffer to a terrible chain mechanical that let not-so-greedy racer David Harrison take the lead. But it was Idaho State short-track and singlespeed champion Cody Peterson who rocked the house and eventually put a 30 second buffer between himself and pro riders Keith Hickerson and defending champion Harrison. Team Tamarack Resorts champion Joanna Peters topped the women with a smoking 48:01 minute race. Stacey Scanlon of Team Tamarack Resort was the pro runner-up. As riders finished they were treated to a huge party, courtesy of the Boise Co-Op and Idaho Mountain Touring. As a local band wailed away, free food and prize raffles stretched out the afternoon. Oktoberfest brew houses provided a taste of what the Boise Co-op has to offer. A special award was given to Adam Mittlieder (Bikes 2 Boards) who stormed the 6in travel Banzai category with a 48:05 and walked away $60.00 richer.

BOISE, ID, August 23 — I'm stilling mulling over the going ons and absorbing the whole experience

BOISE, ID, August 23 I’m stilling mulling over the going ons and absorbing the whole experience of 100 miles in a day, what a trip! It’s been a long while since I’ve put my thoughts down in writing about a race and since this was such a big deal to me I figured I would share.

Since this was my first 100 M race I was in no way taking this lightly in fact just the opposite as I began analyzing all facets of the game plan with a keen eye way back in March. I began to experience anxiety, fear and trepidation, but before long realized I should instead focus on that which I could control such as my current level of conditioning and where I thought it should be come August. I planned to ramp up the mileage steadily throughout the Spring and Summer and even planned a couple races, a 60K in April and 50M in June that I trusted would serve as a yard stick for what might be possible in August.

The June race was Squaw Peak 50M in the Wasatch Mountains outside of Provo UT. I had a great go of it that day and by the time I finished I had loads of confidence the training I put forth so far was positioning me well for the upcoming Leadville gig. My Squaw Peak effort got me to analyzing all sorts of numbers, especially those of 2006 runners (4 in a particular) that posted similar times at Squaw Peak ; also finished Leadville in ‘06. Oh man, did I ever go over the top and Lynn can attest I went all geeky with all things numbers. I was a crunching my splits and theirs with regards to Squaw and what they accomplished at LT and came away thinking a sub 23:00 finish was possible if I could execute the proper game plan and manage the distance accordingly. After all the number crunching I settled on 22:34. I liked the ring of it and figured it a respectable one.

Over the weekend of June 30th I took the opportunity to attend the LT 100M Training Camp and familiarize myself with two sections of the course. Saturday was spent running from May Queen -mile 13.5 over to Twin Lakes 39.5 and Sunday was the infamous over and back Hope Pass section from Twin Lakes to Winfield mile 50 and back to Twin Lakes. The weekend of running proved invaluable as I now had hard and fast numbers which I could compare with the number crunching I completed back in June. Oh howdy do I like crunching numbers and a funny thing, even after crunching I let my estimated 22:34 lay as it was. Besides the ring of it I figured I’d done a good job in preparation and thought it attainable.

August 18th, 4:00 am start with 9 months of prep behind, I was ready to roll. I planned to run strong and smart and all the while preserve myself for a strong finish. I ran by feel and never got hung up with time. I didn’t plan to adhere to anything other than paying heed to the body and what it might kick back in return. I was fully aware of the many nightmares a runner might confront over the course of 100 miles. I’ve witnessed firsthand over the years through pacing duties at Western States with Craig Thornley a runner should at the very least expect the unexpected. Whether or not this includes debilitating blisters, stomach issues and or energy and fueling challenges a runner must still prepare for shit that might happen. I was prepared and the focus turned to the task at hand, complete the distance.

The splits I penciled out were estimates of what I felt possible should I execute a perfect game plan. At the May Queen AS (mile 13.5) I was behind 2 minutes. At Half Moon AS (30.5) 1 behind. The Winfield (50 mile turn around) still 1 behind. Man was I ever feeling solid for the return trip as I was strong, confident and right on schedule. I picked up my first pacer Brian Price and he had me cranking onto Twin Lakes return (60.5) 2 min behind still hanging in and confident. Somewhere around mile 67 I began to tire of gels and the fluids and my stomach started to rebel. I slowed a bit and adjusted to the discomfort and accepted the fact this is a 100M gig and wouldn’t be all smiles. The march forward continued but at a slower pace than either Brian or I cared for. We arrived at Half Moon AS (69.5) 17 min behind. My legs were great, my attitude intact but the stomach wasn’t something I could shake. We continued on a slow pace to Tree Line (73) where Brian exchanged pacing duties with Heather. I managed to swig some pink stuff at Brian’s urging and did so reluctantly but I got it down. Heather and I took off slowly toward Fish Hatchery (76.5) and this proved to be the most trying section of the race as I was battling the first real Demons of my running career and arrived 25 min behind my splits a loss of 2 minutes a mile over the last 3 miles! I began to recall comments Steve Boyenger made about how the low spots won’t last forever, along with the comments from Jeff Riley it will probably get harder than anything you’ve imagined. Because of this shared advice I felt even more prepared! Before long we were at Fish Hatchery when Thornley’s comment potato soup the great elixir came to mind so I slurped as much as I could. Again, solid advice I knew would carry me through the lows. The lows were somewhat low but never insurmountable, I embraced the dark side and motored on.

I left Fish Hatchery with an improved stomach and even made it up the road a half mile before my pacer Shane caught up with me. He got me cranking up Sugar Loaf and before the top we caught and passed a runner which really got me going. We cruised down back side of Sugar Loaf in fine time and met Mia who was to pace me to Tabor Boat Ramp. I followed in the footsteps of Mia and at times we covered ground at a respectable pace and were rewarded by passing a few runners. At times the stomach threw a wrench in the mix but instead I began to focus on the rewards May Queen (86.5) had to offer in the way of more potato soup. It was here I spent the most time all day in any one AS getting my world in order. I finally decided the stomach wasn’t all that bad and set out to prove Riley wrong this really wasn’t anywhere near as hard as I’d imagined so get along little runner boy!

I met up with Lynn at Tabor Boat Ramp (93) somewhere around 2:00 am and was well aware it past her bed time, so best we get going. In typical Lynno fashion she was out front and pushing the pace much like the old times I spent chasing her. I was left with dust and a faint light to follow so follow I did. I managed to run a bit then walk a bit but she kept going and thus forced me try and keep up. Pretty sneaky strategy she formulated and thus I was slightly more inclined to try and latch on. The stomach continued to hold me back a bit but not so much that I couldn’t ask more of my good legs. We continued at times to run a solid pace, even heard Lynno breathing hard during those 400 M stints! About ½ mile out an official was calling in bib numbers to the finish line and over the PA system my name was announced and Lynn starting running. I wasn’t quite ready to respond just yet and suggested she turn off her light so they couldn’t see us walking. After walking a short time I realized what a weak comment I just made, after all this is a run so daddy up and Get er Done! And we did in 23:24:15 and a place in the top 25. An effort I’m happy with and only :50 min off my guesstimated splits not so bad for my first go at 100 miles!

My entire day on the course was a highlight. Even with all the reflection I can’t possibly single out anyone section as better than another they were all heaps of fun. I had a gas running the first half by myself yet I welcomed the company of my pacers for the balance of the day and night, the mix was perfect. What a complete day it was, even with the lows the day was extraordinary. I received dynamic support throughout the day from everyone involved, Brian, Heather, Shane, Mia and Lynn pulled double duty, not only were they supremely confident crew members but all were eager and supportive pacers as well. I can’t imagine a more complete group to surround myself with. A fabulous day, simply fabulous!

SUNRIVER, OR, July 20 — It was finally time to test the body, and see what it was

SUNRIVER, OR, July 20 — Pacific Crest, June, 22, 2007. It was finally time to test the body, and see what it was made of. I was really looking forward to this race. My last week and a half of training had been consistent and my times had been strong. A friend, Tom Liby, member of another triathlon club in Boise – Boise Aeros – had been posting pre-race workouts for a few triathletes getting ready for Ironman Coeur D’alene and Pacific Crest. He is very knowledgeable, talented athlete, and makes a very good motivator/coach.

Arriving on Friday at Sunriver Resort, we drove to the lake and went for a swim in my new wetsuit from F2R, which I totally love. It is fast in the water, and fast out of the water. We attended the pasta party afterwards and headed home for a good night of sleep…which I didn’t get…I slept off and on all night, I think partly due to the change of altitude, and also because of the race in a couple of days. I woke up early, went for a short 40 minute bike ride with a couple of other ladies, followed by a quick 20 minute run, with short 15secs pick-ups…prescribed by my coach Jenny Tobin. I felt kind of sluggish, and still sore from a massage Mark Dauenhauer gave me the previous Tuesday.

I spent the morning getting my Scott Plasma ready, cleaning it, and getting my transition bags in place. I then headed to the finish line of the Half ironman to see my friends finish…they never came, and I could feel that all the standing around was wearing me down, so I decided to go back to the house and go take a nap. On a side note, they did finish, just not at the time that they were expecting. It was a tough day for them, but I think that they are already brave to be going the distance. I slept 3.5 hours! Felt great, and woke up to a documentary on these 2 great triathletes: Team Hoyt…Inspiring. They will be in Boise on August 1, 2007. I cooked a mean dinner – halibut with a little bit of fresh salsa, paired with some delicious pasta. It is nice to be a French woman and have the flair for good cuisine…my husband will vouch for that I am sure. He is spoiled with delicious meals almost every night. Note to self – I found that halibut pasta is a pre-race meal that works for me. I slept like a rock, despite my 3.5-hour nap. I woke up fresh and ready to roll after some oatmeal and a banana.

As the announcer started the first few waves, I was calm but also feeling anxious…not fear, but anxious to test my body and see how it would hold up…excitement is a better word. The field was deep, around 500 athletes in the Olympic distance race. I started off the swim in the front, and got into a good steady pace. I usually have difficulties judging my effort in open water swims. I believe the swim was a little long, only by a couple of minutes. I couldn’t see many yellow caps in front of me, so I figured that I must have been in the front…it happened that I was…I exited 3rd out of the water. I took my F2R wetsuit off in a split-second. My legs felt good right away on the bike, and I knew I was going to have a strong day when the slight hills on the first part of the loop didn’t feel like hills. I put my head down and pedaled strong along the 25.2 miles all the way into T2 in 1.08. My goal before the race was to be in transition by 1hr30…I was faster. My other goal was to start off the run hard. In the past, I would start easy hoping that I would get some running legs under me, but I would never do. So I focused on quick feet, quick arms, and stay strong mentally. Despite the cold weather, my legs felt amazingly good…my taper had worked… another athlete from a previous wave came out of the transition at the same time. I passed her right away, but she picked up her pace enough to set herself up just one body length in front of me…it was perfect as her pace suited me well…I kept right behind her – she would slow down a bit, I would pass her, and vice versa…pace lining on the run. I was going 7, 7.15 mile pace until mile 4… then my muscles weren’t responding as well and I slowed down until the last 3-10th of the last mile where I finally picked it back up to finish strong. I ended up placing 5th overall, 2 minutes from 2nd place, and 2nd in my 25-29 age group. I was and still am happy about my performance. My overall time was the best I have ever had, and mostly, this was the best I have ever felt in a triathlon. Now the challenge is to make sure that it will happen again, and also, that I will do even better, especially on the run. I think that this helped build a little bit of confidence I was lacking. Jenny Tobin always reminds me that I need to gain some experience and trust that my body and mind can pull it off on race day. A great advice that I repeat to myself a lot so that it becomes second nature! This was my third year at Pacific Crest. I truly enjoy the course, the venue, the volunteers and hope that the race will keep growing every year.

Thank you to my sponsors – Tamarack Resort who every year supports our team from pros to amateurs, Scott…for a fast bike that contributes to faster bike splits this year, F2R…for awesome wetsuits that make for faster swims and lightning fast transitions, Smith Optics – so I can see the world in pink every day, Red Roxx, Micron, Mark Dauenhauer – awesome massage therapist, Focus Physical Therapy, Kenda tires, and of course my husband who puts up with the stubborn French character that I am, every single day.

BOISE, July 1 — Team Tamarack Resort represented the mountain bike community well

BOISE, July 1 — Team Tamarack Resort represented the mountain bike community well in the Lyle Pearson 200 relay from Boise to Ketchum, and at The Twelve Hours of Endurance in Park City Utah.

Lyle Pearson 200

Racing from Boise to Ketchum, Team Tamarack covered the distance in 8 hours,35 minutes to place second in this unique road cycling event. Led by Keith Hickerson and Jon Gould, Team Tamarack demonstrated that mountain bikers can hammer on the road.

Tamarack wins Twelve Hours of Endurance

Ryon Butterfield and I combined forces to win the 12 Hours of Endurance setting a course record for number of laps completed and setting the fastest lap time of the day. The Tamarack win resulted from a combination of not giving up and a willingness to suffer.

The race started at 7 AM on a dry, rocky 11 mile loop in the Park City foothills. The combination of continual exposure to sun, the altitude and the rough, rocky course took a toll on all racers.

Ryon completed the first lap with a one second lead over Chris Fox. On my first lap I ripped the sidewall of my front tire on a rocky descent causing me to fly over the handlebars. The wreck ripped my seat of the seat post. After managing to keep the newly installed tube to stay inside the tire, I completed the remaining 8 miles of the lap without a seat. At the end of the lap my quads were spent, I was exhausted and we were now 8 minutes behind the leaders.

Throughout the day we continued to hammer every lap making up small increments of time. The people in the surrounding pits began cheering for us as the day wore on and by 2 PM a race was starting emerge. On lap 11, around 4 PM, Ryon finished his lap approximately one minute behind the leaders. By lap 13 we had a three minute lead. I finished lap 14 with a six minute lead and Ryon set out on lap 15. The former leaders finished lap 14 with time to do one more lap but they choose to quit at that point. Ryon finished lap 15 setting an event record!

We were the only team to complete 15 laps including the four-person teams. The race was the hardest race I have ever done for a number of reasons. Most impressive is that neither Ryon nor myself ever let up and in the end we were rewarded with a win and the recognition from the follower racers for our efforts. At the end of the day it was a typical Tamarack outcome – riding hard, having fun and doing well. Follow Team Tamarack racer Scott White represented well finishing twelve laps and taking second in the single speed solo category.
